Opening Discussion

In this unit, we explore some challenges that students experience when working with fractions, examine local fraction standards, and discuss an approach to fraction instruction that can help to overcome these challenges. We would like to start off the course discussion by brainstorming what you experience when working with students on fraction concepts.

To give you a sense of the community, our course has educators from across the United States, representing 48 out of 50 states and educators from across the globe joining us from 22 countries outside of the US (as of registration Friday)!  We are excited to see a many different roles joining us!

We are excited to embark on this great opportunity to learn together with this large and diverse group of educators.  Welcome to the MOOC-Ed Community!
Our discussions for this unit are: Student Challenges and Teaching Tips. What fraction concepts and skills do your students find most difficult? What suggestions do you have to share with your colleagues about teaching those concepts and skills? Questions for Colleagues. What questions do you have about teaching fractions that you hope will be answered during the MOOC-Ed? Introductions. If you have not done so already, please introduce yourself. Tell us a little about what and where you teach, and your goals in taking this MOOC-Ed.
Everyone is invited to contribute to the discussion. You can start a new discussion to share your ideas, ask questions, suggest additional resources, and add anything else you would like to say. You can then add comments about others’ input and use the critical issue, great tip, agree, and not convinced buttons to record your reactions to others’ ideas. Continue adding and discussing ideas as you review the resources of this unit. At any point during the unit, you can click the 1.3 Discussion Forum link in the left panel to return to the forum.
Once you have clicked on a discussion topic, you will have the option to select a discussion area based on the first letter of your state (if you live in the US) or country (if you are joining us from outside of the US). Additional information on using the discussion forum can be found here. Forum Engagement Guidelines are available here.
