Opening Discussion
We have been very impressed with the level of discussion in Unit 1. The discussion has been very productive, with conversations ranging from suggesting resources that have worked in the past, to brainstorming new instructional strategies. We have enjoyed learning about the diverse group of educators in the course and are excited to get started with Unit 2.
When creating discussions we recommend using descriptive titles to help others with similar interests find you easily. For example: "I have a folding strategy that has worked in the past", "Does anyone have a strategy for ____?", or "Are there any 3rd grade teachers with ideas about _____". Also, groups in the forum are not exclusive, they are provided to help reduce the number of threads, however anyone may enter any discussion area. We encourage you to interact with discussions and colleagues at whatever level meets your professional needs and schedule.
Additional information on using the discussion forum can be found here.
In Unit 2, we explore the context of fair-sharing and how it can be used to effectively implement fraction instruction. We would like to start off this unit’s discussion by exploring what your experience has been with introducing fractions to students.
Our discussions for this unit are:
Introducing Fraction Concepts. How do you introduce fractions content to your students? What concepts and tasks do you use to begin (for what grade students)? Why did you choose this way to introduce fractions?
Fair sharing activities. How have you used fair sharing activities with your students? What tips or resources can you share? What questions do you have about using fair sharing activities successfully with your students?
Once you have clicked on a discussion topic, you will have the option to select a discussion area based on the first letter of your state (if you live in the US) or country (if you are joining us from outside of the US).
